the file mentioned andale32.exe does not exist. The file present/found is

/var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloads/partial/andale32.exe.FAILED

its content is

                        <p>

I did a clean install of Ubuntu MATE last week, installed Play on Linux (which requires MS fonts), installed everything and then Ubuntu kept asking to run ttf-mscorefonts-installer every hour or so. It never succeeds. It's the same error as the bug report and I tried reinstalling via Synaptics, so how can it be fixed?

the problem re-curred after approx 3 days after my last posting.

2 things - In my case is ubuntu 16.04 xenial 64 bit not MATE so I am not familiar with MATE.
secondly - I reinstalled (April25th) the full official release and now is at

uname -a
4.4.0-31-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 13 00:07:12 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I did not see any problem of this nature since.

I'm still after myriad tries and eforts not able to resolve this; here is the message I get after deleting the installer and reinstalling it:

Hi, I have the same error message:

Failure to download extra data files

The following packages requested additional data downloads after package installation, but the data could not be downloaded or could not be processed.

ttf-mscorefonts-installer

The download will be attempted again later, or you can try the download again now. Running this command requires an active Internet connection.

As mentionned is some posts, I tried following manual command:
sudo apt-get --purge --reinstall install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

runs a while, than stops:

ttf-mscorefonts-installer: downloading http://downloads.sourceforge.net/corefonts/andale32.exe
Err:1 http://downloads.sourceforge.net/corefonts/andale32.exe

W: Can't drop privileges for downloading as file '/var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloads/partial/andale32.exe' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied)
E: Failed to fetch https://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/project/corefonts/the fonts/final/andale32.exe 404 Not Found

I don't know what to do next...

Apparently package mscorefont 3.4 is broken. I seem to have fixed it by following:

A better/easier workaround is to download the 3.6 version of ttf-mscorefonts-installer from Debian. Double clicking and installing that package with gnome's software center (and probably also ubuntu's software center) works perfectly. Or, if you would like to run some code, here you go:

wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/contrib/m/msttcorefonts/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.6_all.deb -P ~/Downloads

will download the package to your Downloads folder, and

sudo apt install ~/Downloads/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.6_all.deb

as said here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/766491/failure-to-download-extra-data-files-with-ttf-mscorefonts-installer-on-ubuntu

Eveline, after going on and on with this issue and trying every "solution" in the book, yours finally worked. Who'd have thought just getting a newer version of the package from somewhere else would solve the whole problem. Thanks!
