HARDY BETA FAILS TO BOOT (no setup signature found)

Asked by Michael James on 2008-04-05

All I get when I boot into hardy, quiet or not, I only get two lines after GRUB selects the OS:

Starting up...
No setup signature found... [Loud high pitch beep]

THATS IT! I was on vista before that and I had to hold the power button down because Vista stopped responding and decided that was enough vista for today. The recovery terminal doesn't work; the only things in GRUB that let me boot are the memtest86 and Vista. The problem should not be with GRUB it looks fine. I've also tried starting vista (did not login) and shutting down safely to no avail.

What to do!?

I knew I should have made that /home/ partition...

I am on kernel 2.6.24-15

I have read that this is a problem that happens before the kernel even gets entirely up, so, what would happen if I were to copy a /boot/ from a live cd to my comp (after editing the menu.lst in GRUB)?

you have to update your grub

grub-install /disk/for/mbr

it's most likely a too old version of your mbr installed (i have a system that was originally debian and had 0.92 grub).

what version of grub do you have? what version of ubuntu did you originally install.

Michael James (mbj1103) said : #4

I had the most recent version of grub and i fixed my MBR (vista) about 3 weeks ago then went back to ubuntu two weeks ago. So to answer your question: 8.04 beta with this new MBR

I just grabbed my home directory on an external hard drive, re-installed ubuntu, and transplanted the important stuff.

Oh well...

Same issue for me. Have XP, repartitioned drive with Parted Magic, have a 10GB partition now set aside for Ubuntu. Boot from 8.04 Ubuntu cd from iso and get "No setup signature found"
Tried googling but no concrete answer(s) thus far.
Any help appreciated.

I did "Check CD for defects" and "Install Ubuntu" and get a popup window with:

Boot loader
/casper/vmlinuz

Hit Enter and nothing. ?

Found this in another thread and tried it:

F6
live acpi=off

Apparently loaded the kernel and tried to boot, still same error:

No setup signature found...

I got this error, checked to ensure the installation disk had burned correctly. I swapped the installation disk drive with a spare and the installation proceeded without issue. I can only guess this is an incompatiblity issue. So either use usb or replace CD drive to progress.
