why isn't acetoneiso in the ubuntu repository?

Asked by Markus Döbele

I lately found acetoneiso as an excellent replacement for demon tools.
There is a deb package already but its not part of the official ubuntu repository.
I would like t see it as an official part because typing in a mount command is no longer needed as there is this very nice gui to do it.
Its webpage is: http://www.acetoneiso.netsons.org/

Hello Markus:

Yes what you said was right,

But the question is why is it not there in the ubuntu repositories?

It may be because there is already a deb package for it and its easy to install and configure.. Normally most of the programs in ubuntu are packaged in .deb format (downloading the tarballs and packaging it) uploaded into the repositories as to people should not find it difficult to install those packages as opposed to them downloading the tarballs and compiling them and having a crack at resolving dependencies and so on...

To summarise since its readily available as a deb package on the net (In specific to debian/Ubuntu) which allows easy installation, Its not uploaded into the ubuntu repos..

Hope that clears your doubt,

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

so acetoneiso isn't in repo because the authors release a deb package? I see this as quite unfair! The first thing people do is open synaptic or adept and search for a program similar to daemon tools and they don't find anything in repo that actually does the job! so the user is forced to google and find himself acetoneiso.... it's not a problem but...hey, wasn't ubuntu made to win "bug number 1"? well, I think that these applications should be in repo because nowdays with games in exotic formats different from ISO (bin, daa, nrg, mdf and more) people simply need a software like AcetoneISO!

it's very simple, go on ubuntu forum and search for mount or convert image as keywords and you'll find they all ask: "hi, I need a clone of daemon tools, any suggest" and people reply "most of the job can be done from terminal installing the right packages, however you can do with acetoneiso".

Maybe you can reply to me saying: "but a new Windows user does not know daemon tools either". that's right, but I don't understand. to win bug number 1 it is quite useless to have "mdf2iso" package in repo which is CLI only and not AcetoneISO that actually lets you do everything within 2 clicks!

this is my point of view of course!

Funniest argument I ever heard!

And what about updates? Such a waste of APT...

So never create a deb package yourself for your software.
debian/ubuntu will not accept you then ^^

The argument about the already existing package does not hold.
I guess they need to contact debian and have their package tested and included.
Then it goes automatically also in ubuntu.

A lot of time has passed, AcetoneISO still isn't in Ubuntu repository. It's probably easier to get an app included in Microsoft's Windows installation.

I would also like to request AcetoneISO to be added to the repos. This program is very useful.

Forget about it. Ubuntu has gmountiso, furiusmountiso, and cli programs (including ones with well known bugs) but it doesn't have AcetoneISO. This request is old since year 2007. When someone doesn't want a software to get in, this is what happens. 10$ that if it was written with GTK it would be in Ubuntu repo since day one.

No need for hard feelings here, come on.

I have contacted the authors of the program to see if they are insterested in being the official mantainers.
Then we can create a bug, subscribe ubuntu sponsors and try to find a sponsor to upload the package.

I know it is kind of bureaucracy but this is the official (and only) way to go.

There is some effort done for the packaging of AcetoneISO here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/238577

I have packaged the latest version (2.2.1) and now looking for testers before starting to look for a sponor.
For those who are interested in trying it they can follow the details in the thread.

Can you help with this problem?
