How do I set default browser from command line

Asked by tomdean

I work from the command line.

I want to set the default browser so when I click a link in thunderbird, it opens firefox.

I tried most of the things I found via google.
update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
editing files in .local/share/applications
sudo update-desktop-database

After each change, I log out/in and/or reboot.

Still when I click a link in thunderbird, it opens seamonkey.

You need to set the browser to open URLs in the configuration files of Thunderbird.

I had all three set to firefox.

The solution is in the yellow link below the screen captures.

In thunderbird, edit -> preferences -> attachments and change http and https to use firefox web browser (default)
