The Add/Remove List doesn't work

Asked by doug

When I go to the Add/Remove list and click to add a program a message box pops up that says "the list of applications is not available." Also, it won't let me enable the nvidia graphics card. Does anyone know how I would go about fixing this?

What I've done with Ubuntu so far:
I just set up a dual boot today with Windows and Ubuntu partitioning my hard drive 50/50. I previously had it set up with just ubuntu and everything worked fine, but I wanted it to dual boot with windows too, but since I did that I've been experiencing the above problems.

Open Applications => System => Administration => Software Sources and select the desired sources.
Run Applications => Accessories => Terminal and enter "sudo apt-get update".
