Can only run recovery mode with nvidia GTX950M on MSI GE72 laptop

Asked by christopherIanBaxter

So, new MSI GE72 laptop, Ubuntu xenial(16.04) and I cant see my logon screen unless I boot recovery option, and then only 640x480 resolution is available.
I tried editing grub default to append: "nomodeset grub_gfxmode=1280x1024x24" which works but still doesnt activate the installed nvidia (linux 64bit driver 361.28) GTX950M.

Can anyone please recommend what to test with X?.....
