How do I move window buttons to the right side of the window?

Asked by tadiv

EVERY other computer I use has min, max, and close buttons on the upper-right of the window title bar - here in Ubuntu 15.10 they re on the left corner of the window. How do I move them to the right side?

Thanks,
Tom

The left makes a lot of sense due to the Unity launcher. Having them on the left means less movement to manipulate application windows.

What is the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a

And what desktop / shell are you using please?

Thanks

It earlier releases of Ubuntu it was possible to move the icons left or right, but this feature has been removed.

So, I don't want to insult anyone, but why would one remove that option? Every other windows interface I use has the buttons on the right side - so I have to adapt my behavior for my home machine because that option was removed?! Am I crazy, or is that just silly? Is it that way for all LINUX distributions, or are those of us who have enjoyed Ubuntu the only ones who are stuck with this? When did this change, because I'm quite sure while I was running 14.04 I had the buttons on the right side...

Canonical made the decision. Ask them.

14.04 had the buttons on the left. This has been the default in Ubuntu (using Unity shell) since Natty was released in 2009.

With the Unity launcher on the left it doesn't make sense to have the controls on the right. You are asking the user to swing all the way over there (especially in high resolution displays) just to manage the window. It's madness. Microsoft having theirs on the right is also nonsensical unless you have your start button on the right or the task bar down the right hand side. You want the user to exert the least effort to do what they want not have to do huge arm swings (think about the bra flung scene in Carry on camping) just to close an application

"and fling! "

It turns out you can move the buttons ... And I don't use or lije th Unity launcher...
I found it in dconf-editor in the following path:
org>gnome>desktop>wm>preferences
and I changed "button-layout" from

"close,minimize,maximize:"
to
":minimize,maximize,close"

The key is the location of the ":"

I had 2 typos in "And I don't use or lije th Unity launcher..." you probably figured it out, but it was supposed to be "And I don't use or like the Unity launcher..."
