Is there a way to set up administrative passwords on Ubuntu Live USB like with full HD installs?

Asked by Damir

Hi there,
I would greatly appreciate help regarding the following issue: I have Live USB with persistent mode installed and I am very happy with Ubuntu and use it daily. I installed updates and use it as regular OS. My concern are security issues: is there a way to set up administrative passwords like with full HD installs? Thank you very much in advance.

You can do anything in the live Ubuntu CD that you can do in an installed OS except reboot.

If you run:

passwd

You can set the password of the user you are using. You can also use sudoers and groups (just as you do in an installed OS) to manage security and access.

Thank you very much! I managed to set up password and root password. After I logged out and Logged in again, all my personal settings and folders-files "disappeared". Some of them I found in new locations, some of them could not find. So now I am starting from the scratch: Installing new USB Live and to try to set up password beforehand (i.e. before doing everything else).
Any thoughts what happened, why it all messed up my settings? Thank you very much in advance.
