Asked by Galen Thurber

getting critical error on bootup
bios will report
read error
or it will start grub2
and report
filesystem not found, attempting to read beyond hd0.

drive is SANDISK SSD 120GB
drive can be checked via linux live USB stick bootup,
all partitions are fine, gparted
hard drive test reports no errors, no errors in SMART history
used partedmagic live boot tools to fix grub2, did not fix
no other disks are installed, no active DVD or CD or flash sticks

partition 1: /home
partition 2: / xubuntu 14.04.4 64b
partition 3: unallocated
partition 4: sparky4 linux

grub controlled by xubuntu partition 2

critical problem started occurring after upgrade to kernel 4.2
and when machine is cold started (sitting for hours off)

If you boot an older kernel is it OK?

grub2 is not reliable, it will not enter recovery mode.
all I have is 2 4.2 kernel options, neither work

I can't boot to other Linux (Sparky4.2) either.

I have just done a thorough file system check from a live USB boot
no errors.

I will try grub doctor again.

grub doctor worked.
several cold reboots still ok
perplexed what caused critical error

Hi, no idea if this is really related, but I also get blk_update_request errors on Xubuntu 16.04. According to Bug #1526537 this seems to be a kernel problem rather than a grub issue.

Can you help with this problem?
