Help w/ new install of Ubuntu 7.10 desktop

Asked by speciald

I have a new build system running WinXP Pro SP-2. I'd like to try Linux. I ran Knoppix 5.1 from CD with no problems. It's an Athlon AM-2 X2 w/ 2 gb ram and 2 hard drives. One drive is fat32 and empty so I'd like to put Linux there.
I downloaded Ubuntu 7.10 - desktop - i386 and burned it to a CD. When I try to boot from the CD I get [0.456000] MP-BIOS bug:8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
[0.456000] Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work!
Boot with APIC=debug and send a report. Then try booting with 'noapic' option.
I've tried some of the boot options but can't get anywhere.

When you said you attempted a few boot options what exactly did you do and where did you put the booting option?

At the opening screen I selected F6 to get to a command line and tried backing up to " file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu seed boot=" and also backed up to "t=casper intrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash" and typed in boot=liveacpi=off
both times i get the last line of [0.960000] kernel panic
I've taken digital photos of the text on screen. I'll e-mail them to you if that would help.

I downloaded the amd64 version and it loaded ok. I must have made a bad disk of the i386 version.
Thanks for trying to help this n00b
