DVDs have a somewhat complicated format to them, so tools are usually used to do the heavy lifting. One of these is tovid; there's a guide to using it here http://www.arsgeek.com/?p=439 which might help you. It links to a more in-depth forum thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=183936 which describes the use of tovid to build DVDs from arbitrary video files.

I would also suggest that you first burn DVDs to files before you burn them to actual discs, and attempt to play the image as you would a DVD. (I use vlc, so for me this is "vlc dvd:///home/user/test.iso"; I don't know what media player you use.) This'll let you know if you've made a mistake somewhere before you burn another coaster.

Thanks Adam Buchbinder for the info. I found tovid installed it and it worked the first time. its pretty cool for a newbie like me to have the guide to walk me through the whole process. The whole Ubuntu experience is very educational, I'm hooked, and probbably will never go back to Windows. Thanks again sincerely tombo!
