update to kernel 4.2.0-30-generic updates hides login screen

after upgrading kernel to 4.2
my xubuntu login screen will not appear.
I have to switch to tty1-6 then back to tty7

Is there a boot parameter missing (tty handoff ?)
I don't use splash or quiet
I've tried using a grub background image of differing sizes and none

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G71 [GeForce 7900 GT/GTO] (rev a1)
using nvidia-304.131 tested

What Ubuntu release are you running?

If you select an older kernel from the grub menu, does this boot without problems?

What is the contents of your /etc/default/grub configuration file?
