Windows with Ubuntu, drive partition and data lost

Asked by raphaelgoncalves

I had already read previous topics about the subject, and despite knowing I've choosen "use full disk, and that the system doesn't warn that your entire disk will be erased in a big 24 red font with yellow background, I would like to know if there's any way to recover any kind of possible data from my previous partitions from my dead windows vista.

If I was not clear before, that's what I did step by step: 1) I had windows vista on partition1 and data files on partition2 2) Ubuntu didn't install on windows I had to do the installation from the CD boot 3)It asked if I wanted to make a partition or use the full disk, I chose the second one because I understood that the first one would delete 1 partition (what would be better by now!) 4) Installation cmplete, where is my data? OOHHH NOOOO!

Ok, you are free to laugh if you want...but please help me.

Maybe you could find some data with testdisk or photorec

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

But I would guess that you've lost the data - and the more you use the drive the less the chances become.

I wouldn't laugh - it's a lesson in backup use though.

There should be an option to resize the windows partition to fit ubuntu in there. Maybe you just missed it.

It happens sometime.

I suggest that you just reinstall windows and get the old data from backups.

If it happens that you don't have backups, shame on you, you just learned how important they are.

There is a way to recover data. it won't be for sure and probably not all data. But if you really had something VERY important that you can't loose or your head will come off, I suggest you that you shut your pc now. Take of the drive and take it to a technician that will know how to help you. Make sure it's a good technician. Can't help you finding one.

The process to recover the data is complicated. And way above the scope for the answers here.

Can you help with this problem?
