on another computer it appears as a data drive with a CD symbol.
it sets itself up automatically as :-
Ethernet Network (ZTE Mobile Broadband Station)
and works quite normally with connectivity to the Internet.

it indicates similarly on my computer, which also has a wired ADSL internet connection
but will not connect with the internet even when the wired ADSL connection is switched off

Ok, search the web for:

19d2:1405

Which is the ID of the device and you will find guides.

Been through the posts but cannot find any solution that helps. It all sound like Greek to me.

what cannot be understood is how it works on another computer with Ubuntu 15.10 which has been configured similar to my computer.

It seems that it clashes with an existing land line (wired) Auto Ethernet connection.
Maybe it has to be set up on a different port?

any suggestions?
Thank you.

Not an expert on that, not even close, but I do face that situation too. Until you can figure out to configure both the connections to work coherently, you can just physically unplug the wired connection when it goes down/fails and your dongle supposed to work then.

Thank you, Pavel.

I have tried that but it does not work for me.

It works automatically on a computer which does not have any other connection.

The dongle when plugged in automatically sets itself up as "Auto Ethernet". This only happens with a computer that does not have any other internet connection. Thereafter it works quite normal and connects to the internet.

On a computer with another internet connection, such as a Director Telephone Line connection, it will not connect to the internet even after the existing internet connection is disabled.

The only way out of this was when a completely new installation of Ubuntu is done on a freshly formatted hard disk. Then it works OK.
Perhaps some old configuration file was creating the problem.
