How do I switch from i386 kernel to i586?

Asked by pipedreambomb

When I installed ubuntu, it asked me what processor or whatever I had, I chose i386 as a guess, but actually I have a Pentium III. How do I change?

If you are running Edgy, there is no kernel optimized for i585, only a i386 version and a generic one. This reduces the complexity of having a lot of kernels for numerous subarchitectures.

Actually, I'm on Dapper, does the same scenario apply?

No, if you are using Dapper you can choose i686 version, which is good for a PIII processor. If you want a deeper optimization, you have to manually reconfigure your kernel.

Ok, great, thanks. So... how do I choose the i686 version? I'm not too fussed about the manual stuff though :-)

You have to enter the following command:
sudo apt-get install linux-image-686
It is a metapackage which is going to install the latest i686 kernel.

You could use Synaptic too: you have to search that package and mark it for installation.

Can you help with this problem?
