Asked by Ralph

How do I replace the 32bitOS Ubuntu-desktop-15.10-i386 with Ubuntu-desktop-15.04-amd64 OS trashing and 32bit apps, but retaining Windows XP(64bit) OS and multi system loader?

You will need to boot to Windows and remove the current Linux partitions. It will benefit you to reinstate NTLDR so that the system is a single boot with unpartitioned space. Be sure to run a final full backup before starting.

A Windows forum will be able to tell you how to put the crappy Windows boot loader on the system.

You can then boot to the Wily install media and install to the freed space and the dual boot will be managed for you.

I assume you are dual booting Ubuntu and XP (Despite XP bei the dead and gone and not secure).

@Ralph: please keep in mind that both Ubuntu 15.04 and Windows XP are end-of-life and not supported anymore. No more updates.

If you want to dual-boot, I suggest installing Windows 10 (64-bit) and then Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit.....

Mark, I can't manage to boot 15.10-amd64 on my laptop while 15.04-amd64 boots to the run/install screen.
I assume that 15.04-amd64 will update to 15.10-amd64 once 15.04 is installed; This was the route taken after
installing 15.04-i386(32bit). The release notes for 15.10-amd64 warn of assorted bugs for the hardware
of my laptop; I assume some of these are blocking completion of a boot from the 15.10-amd64 (.iso).

The currently installed 15.10 (32bit) is inoperable after I turned off the mouse
there seems no way to turn it back on.
