Please make sure that you have a working internet connection and then re-try the command.

Please check with your VMware documentation how to set up the network.

Re Lubuntu 15.10
Please provide details,
e.g. Is this also a VMware installation?
What happens when you try starting the virtual system?
Did this system already work once, or was it never functioning after installation?
etc.

In what sense does the Lubuntu guest system "hang upon opening"?
Please provide more details.
Can you open the grub menu of the Lubuntu system during starting?

Try recovery mode by selecting the related entry in the grub menu of the Lubuntu system.

Hi good evening,

May I join the discussions here because I have an almost identical problem.

I tried to update from 14.04 to 15.10 and now faced with a blank screen - to cut a long story short, I searched and have found upon here. I too am getting the exact same responses as detailed above on #2 The only difference I appear to have is I appear?? To have lost the ability to connect to the internet to get any updates.

I have been trying the ubuntu community's support forum and whilst everyone has been very good with suggestions, none of them has been able to recover my system.
