ubuntu not starting

Asked by mr lee

when I start the computer, i'm given a choice of 4 or 5 options (I always pick just plain "Ubuntu") after that, I see the Ubuntu logo and the 5 dots, but then I just get a black screen. It never finishes starting up. Help!

Which release of Ubuntu?
Do other kernels work OK?
Does the system have a make and model?
What happened before the issue started to occur?

pretty sure the release is 14.04 trusty...other kernels? not sure what you mean...I have a Dell inspiron 1505... I HAD been playing around with Banshee and Rhythmbox... my wife had closed down the cover of the laptop, and when I reopened it, it never "came back", just a black screen... hope this helps

Hold SHIFT at boot and then use cursors to select the older kernel.

I tried that- I chose the original 12.04 initially- it brought me back to that desktop. However, the issue there was it would not get internet. Also, under 12.04, I had 195 updates which would not install due to "Untrusted Sources". but let's ignore that for the moment. I tried a couple of other versions both with and without Recovery mode, and still nothing.
