right i have just realised that the machine that works with opera and flash player has opera 9.24 on it . so i thought great why not put 9.24 on the other machines. so i used addremove programs and removed opera then i downloaded and installed opera 9.24 . i have a problem when i try and start opera i now get an error message saying apperars another opera is using the same config directory because its lock file is active:/home/andrew/.opera/lock do you want to start opera anyway . if i click yes this message goes but opera wont start also i cannot shut ubuntu down using the normal red shutdown restart change user icon it just wont do anything . i have tried this on booth my other machines and now have this problem on them booth presumably i have not uninstalled the old version of opera compleatley . anyone any ideas how i cure this please. andrew

I'm totally with you on this Andrew. I'm almost considering rebooting to Gutsy Gibbon!

HI Andrew
You may find this usefull. I have actually managed to get flash player working with ubuntu (hardy heron) and opera (9.5), although the player I've installed Via firefox is a bit limited in it's ability, for instance it works reasonably well in You Tube but not in google video and myspace is a bit of a no go area for watching videos etc, but it's better than nothing. Got to say though that this is the first time i've been able to use opera at all for this kinda stuff.

here's what 'justin' from the opera support team sent me:-

Here's a more thorough explanation for you:

http://my.opera.com/remcolanting/blog/2008/04/14/opera-and-flash-on-
linux

Basically, the most recent release of Flash is incompatible with Opera,
versions 9.2x and below. The 9.50 Kestrel-based betas and snapshots are
compatible with the most recent Flash. I still have trouble with the
most recent Flash, on AMD64, so I end up using 9r48 for everything. That
article was the best explanation of the issue I could find, however.

Good luck!
