Try to set your monitor at the "System->Administration->Screen and Video Cards".

Anyways, try clicking on "System->Preferences->Screen Resolution"

Attention: the names of the menus might be slightly different cause my os is not in english.

Hello

Please try to press CTRL+ALT+"+" and/or CTRL+ALT+"-" to dynamically change video frequency
or press CTRL+ALT+BKSPACE to restart graphics layer.

Reconfiguring your xserver-xorg may help you.

A) If you can view graphics Gnome desktop

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal
and jump to step C

B) If you cannot view graphics Gnome desktop

Please press CTRL+ALT+F2 and make login with your user and password
and go on to step C

C)

To make a backup copy of your actual /etc/X11/xorg.conf type:

cd /etc/X11
sudo cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.bak

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then try to reconfigure your xserver-xorg

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

answer to the simple questions, then restart the pc.

If something goes wrong you can restore the saved copy of your old configuration, open a terminal or login to a virtual terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+F2 and type:

cd /etc/X11
sudo cp xorg.conf.bak xorg.conf

and restart the pc, type:

sudo reboot

Of course during the dpkg-reconfigure you want to select the options that work best with your system. and I always configure the monitor using the 'medium' option, which will let you select the resolution and refresh rate in a method that makes sense to me. Easy might work better for others.

Hope this helps!

Bhavani Shankar.

Look at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file - perhaps post the "Monitor" section.

See "man xorg.conf" - you can add :

HorizSync
VertRefresh

settings. But be careful (and make a copy of the file before changing).

You might have :

Scanning Frequency Horizontal 30-96KHz
Vertical 47-150Hz

also as said above before doing a "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", it might be worth moving (renaming) the xorg.conf file - so you know a new one is created.

Wait I just went into recovery mode and reset everything to defult and now my maximum resolution is 1360 by 800 which is just a little too short because my Samsung is supposed to be on 14990 by 900 or something like that how do I change it?

Hello due to the time difference I couldnt reply..

So, In recovery mode you reconfigured your xserver and that did the trick great!!!

Mine is also a big 19" samsung monitor and I m running at 1024*768 and its running fine... (And the max resolution is higher than what I am running now... ;-) ) as I said above

during the dpkg-reconfigure you want to select the options that work best with your system. and I always configure the monitor using the 'medium' option, which will let you select the resolution and refresh rate in a method that makes sense to me. Easy might work better for others and linux systems are designed such that to "just work" and as long its working fine no problems should be there

Bhavani Shankar.
