instalation problem

well i have a huge problem
my laptop with windows vista has a virus that when i enter in my account the death screan show up,
a friend told me that i can download the ubuntu and i can take my important files and the restore the pc, the problem its this when i enter the cd with ubuntu and i do all the process there is a part when the screen its gray and black and then its black i cannot enter or do anything, what can i do in that case?? cause i need my important files and well i cannot use ubuntu.
help??!
