will i ever be able to install flash player

Asked by Andrew

hi i am obviousley a compleate plank as i have spent well in excess of 200hrs trying to install the flash player on my pc , i use opera browser i have dowloaded the flash player version 9,o,115,0.tar.gz for linux (x86) this has been dowloaded to my desktop i then extracted it this created another item on my desktop which i have run in terminal . this is what i get in the terminal install flash player 9 for linux
adobe flash player 9 will be installed on this machine
you are running the adobe flash player installer as a non root user
adobe flash player 9 will be installed in your home directory
to install flash player 9 know press enter
to cancel instalation at any time press control c

when i press enter i follow all the instructions and it appears to have installed the i player
however when i try to use opera browser it always says i need to install flash player ,
after doing all this the mozilla browser will go to bbc iplayer for example and i can select a program to watch , but as soon as i click play the browser shuts down .
is there any hope at all that i oneday could get this to work how many thousands of hours will it take before i get it working or is it just impossible and i am wasting my time
to say i am frustrated with this is a major understatment
can anyone help before i end up in a padded cell please . Thanks Andrew

Have you set it to install specifically in the Opera plugins folder, or have you followed the defaults?

Also, see if the following website helps: http://www.opera.com/linux/docs/plugins/install/#flash

right i have just realised that the machine that works with opera and flash player has opera 9.24 on it . so i thought great why not put 9.24 on the other machines. so i used addremove programs and removed opera then i downloaded and installed opera 9.24 . i have a problem when i try and start opera i now get an error message saying apperars another opera is using the same config directory because its lock file is active:/home/andrew/.opera/lock do you want to start opera anyway . if i click yes this message goes but opera wont start also i cannot shut ubuntu down using the normal red shutdown restart change user icon it just wont do anything . i have tried this on booth my other machines and now have this problem on them booth presumably i have not uninstalled the old version of opera compleatley . anyone any ideas how i cure this please. andrew

Have you tried to remove the lock file?
From your home directory
> dir .*
to view all the config files( I think those are all the .somename directories)
> cd .opera
> rm -i lock

or uninstall opera
> cd .opera
> rm -i *
> cd ../
> rmdir .opera
and reinstall opera

You may also need to change permissions to remove certain files like lock.
chmod 644 theFilename I think is proper.

This is only a suggestion. I don't want to screw up your machine, but it should get rid of all of opera's config files
Hang in there.

Actually the instructions that are specified are rather easy to follow and are step-by-step, just read the instructions carefully and try them according to the order given and it should work.

Yes you launch a terminal Applications->accessories->terminal.
The terminal should naturally open in your home directory.
and then type:
> dir .*
to see the list of config dirs.
> cd .opera
if
>rm -i lock
says permission denied use the chmod command.
The chmod command sets permissions on file access.
and then repeat
>rm -i lock
else
or uninstall opera.
Launch the terminal window and:
> dir .*
to see if .opera is still there
> cd .opera
> rm -i *
> cd ../
> rmdir .opera
and reinstall opera
Linux takes a little getting used to if coming from the windows world.
