Firefox 44 freezes in ubuntu 14.04.1 after aprox 1 hour of use

Asked by jbrown1952

Running Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS 64 bit on i5 powered computer with 4 GB Ram. Firefox recently updated to version 44. When I have two firefox windows open for a while (1 hour or so) the computer freezes. No add-ons installed. Adobe flash plugin is installed. Any suggestions?

Does it happen with Google Chrome?

No, Chromium seems to work fine. Thanks for your time and expertise.

Have you tried closing the browser, renaming the ~/.mozilla folder then launching the browser (I assume you do not use Thunderbird as an email client).

I don't know how to rename the file. I'm a long time ubuntu user, starting with releases in 2006, but I'm not "tech" savvy.
Thanks for your time and expertise.

Close the browser, open a terminal and run:

mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla_old

Been using Ubuntu since 2006 and never used the mv command.... Strange.

Once you run the command, open the browser. Is it stable?

I opened a terminal:
user@user-ThinkPad-T420:~$
typed in: mv~/.mozilla~/mozilla_old (immediately following above line at blinking cursor)
response: bash: mv~/.mozilla~/.mozilla_old: No such file or directory

I've tried using a terminal numerous times and many more attempts failed than were successful.

Thank you for attempting to help but at this point I am going to give up. This is not the 1st time I've had issues with firefox freezing, but I prefer it over chromium. I readily admit that I'm not good with software and only slightly better working with hardware.

The problem isn't solved but to end this thread I will declare it solved.

It didn't work because you didn't run the command I gave. You tried to retype it and botched it. You missed a space. Why do you think I give the exact command to run....
