Put Ubuntu on USB stick with Hadoop/MapR

I need for Demo purposes to put a skinny version of Ubuntu on a USB stick on my i5. I want to put a scaled down version of single-node Hadoop/MapR also on my USB Stick.

What size should my USB Stick be??????

What size USB Stick will I need and what url will I need for Ubuntu? And where do I get a single node Hadoop/MapR.
