no network or mouse

Hi I have been using ubuntu on and off for years. With the later version,s I find that the network is not working. I have an atheros wifi card and use gigabyte main boards. The inbuilt drivers will not work on my 970A-d3p or the 880G-ud3h mainboards as well as a micro server I have set up. older server and desktop versions will work but I have had problems with all ubuntu versions after version 12. I can install mint with no problems. With no network I cant download tools and how to's to solve the problem. The latest board Gigabyte 970A-D3P has a problem with the usb mouse as well.
