Alsa Issues; xubuntu loses audio capability after restarting.

Asked by RuKi

I know, I know, another ubuntu audio help request. I've read plenty of other people's requests, but none of the solutions provided seem to work for me.

I'm running the latest version of xubuntu, 6.10 (Edgy Eft). For audio, I've got a Sound Blaster PCI 16 from Creative Labs. It's been working for a long time in Windows ME for me.

When I installed xubuntu, I was pleasantly surprised to find my audio working, initially. This didn't last, however. Once I restarted my computer, and returned to xubuntu, the sound no longer worked. When I open up alsamixer from my terminal, the Master, Master Mono, headphone, and PCM sliders are missing. After purge removing linux-sound-base, alsa-base, and alsa-utils with apt-get, then reinstalling them, and rebooting my machine again, my sound returns. However, if I reboot again, I get the same effect as I did after rebooting from a fresh install.

I'm thinking that a setting must be getting modified or something when my machine is being booted (or shut down) that's causing my audio to cease functioning. Does anyone have any idea what the cause of my issue would be, and how I could go about fixing it? Reinstalling sound packages upon every reboot isn't that fun.

Can you provide the output of the following commands:

cat /etc/modules
lsmod

I am suspecting some sound module is being loaded once when installing the packages, but not at boot time.
