How do I get the version of an installed package?

Asked by René Brandenburger

Hi, if I report a bug, I would like to give the exact package version. Is there a simple way to get a copy pastable version of an installed package, as synaptics does not let me copy the installed version from it's version pane. With the exact version, I mean the package version as shown in synaptic (eg. nautilus in hardy is 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu1 (hardy) )

Current practice when reporting bugs is to use apt-cache policy <package-name>
