Replacement for hda=stroke parameter after conversion to UUID (edgy)

Asked by James Wyper

I have just upgraded an old IBM PC from Dapper to Edgy. The BIOS only supports discs up to 33GB; however I have (under Dapper) successfully used a 250GB disk as hda and an 80GB disk as hdb. The 80GB disk also has the partition table remapped because I installed Ontrack on it before I learned about the kernel options

hda=stroke hdb=stroke hdb=remap63

(which are the options I need to boot with these discs successfully and use all the available space).

The Edgy upgrade has *removed* these options from my grub menu.lst (even my old kernel versions) and replaced root=hda with root=UUID=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I have managed to reboot successfully - for now - by changing back to root=hda1 and adding hda=stroke hdb=stroke hdb=remap63 to the boot parameters.

I have two questions:

1. Assuming that the conversion to UUID took place for a good reason, and that referring to discs as hdx is deprecated, what syntax should I use in my boot options instead of (e.g.) hda=stroke?

2. Shouldn't the Edgy upgrade program have noticed this and at least alerted me so that I wasn't initially left with an unbootable system? Should I file a bug or will this ticket do?

Thanks,
James

Did you tried with UUID=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx=stroke variant?

Can you help with this problem?
