Kernel doesn't support UDF

Asked by Ihatewindows

I was pulling my hair out for the last six months trying to figure out why the heck some DVDs, but not all (encrypted, pressed, burned, it doesn't matter) just will not be recognized. Even DVDs I just finished burning! In the GNOME Disk Utility, the disks show up as X.X GB Unknown, and will not mount. I have to manually go into a terminal, type

sudo mount /dev/sr0 /mnt

and just deal with it. This is a real pain, and I just recently figured out why. According to this:

http://superuser.com/questions/730130/how-to-get-ubuntu-12-04-to-recognize-the-udf-filesystem

in addition to this:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-desktop-74/some-udf-dvds-will-not-mount-unknown-filesystem-4175550577/

I deduced that the kernel was not compiled with UDF support. This is a major problem, and it seems to be hardware independent, as it happens on my HP xw6600 Workstation and my Dell Latitude 14.

Should this be filed as a bug?
