Feisty was fine, deleted XP files, now getting install errors

Asked by hiker42

Was running Feisty 7.04 from the disk a number of items with no problems. Was getting ready to install Feisty so I wanted more disk space and went into the XP on my Toshiba Satellite 1415 laptop. Removed Yahoo Browser Services, Yahoo messenger, AOL chat program (21.7M) and MS Works, total removal added over a 1 GB of space which is good since the HD is less than 30 M. Rebooted Feisty from CD and now I'm getting "error starting GNOME setting Daemon" which I never started before. For the heck of it tried Gutsy and I just got garbage, no GUI, just a bunch of weird lines. Only thing I can think of is that I deleted something in XP that caused this problem but I don't know how it happened since I was using the "add-remove" software tool in XP. Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

Your problem does not seem to be related to deleting files from XP partition. Please shut down your laptop completely, take off the battery for 10-20 secs, put it back and try booting directly to ubuntu cd.

Doing this I sometimes get Feisty to load. Somewhere I was reading it might be a memory issue with the Live CD, should I try the text based CD?

Trying the text based install may help. Please do.

Can you help with this problem?
