Error: nosuch partition Error: you need to load the kernel first

Asked by michael

The above error shows up on Ubuntu 14.04 most of the time. It comes up after I choose the OS to use. Triple boot. Have tried three different kernels, the newest, and the last two. Some times the newest will not work, but number two will. I have searched for a solution, but not found anything that worked. When this started, Windows 7 became very slow, and froze every time it was turned on. Thought hardware problem. Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 on one 500GB HDD. Ubuntu 14.04 an second 500GB HDD. Ubuntu 12.04 works good. Dell Optiplex GX280, 3.1 GIB, Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.8GHz, Quadro FX 540, 32bit. Have done Grub repair, both disk smart status, disk is healthy. Any ideas?

Boot to the live CD / USB Ubuntu desktop. You can then chroot to the installed OS which manages the booting (strange to run 2 releases of Ubuntu on the same system) and not only run updates but also reinstate GRUB to the MBR of the drive.

OmgUbuntu has a guide named "Sticking it to GRUB" which can help here.

You can also run an fsck on the Linux partitions to make sure those are OK too. The file system will need to be unmounted to work.
