Setup partitioning question

Asked by Jeff

Hello, I need to install and harden 14.04. when I install on VMware workstation for practice, I have the option to create separate partitions for home, tmp, var, usr, root. I need to install on ESXi5.5 and when I do this, the partitioning options on install don't appear to be available and I'm curious if anyone knows why this may be?

Happy Holidays,

Jeff

You only need separate partitions if you anticipate the file system getting full. This stops the folder downing the whole server.

Having /var as it's own partition for logging servers and so forth. File servers benefit from having /home on its own partition.
