Update Manager Doesn't Work Anymore, Gutsy Gibbon 7.10

Asked by cheryl holmes

Update Manager Doesn't Work Anymore, Gutsy Gibbon 7.10

Suddenly the Update Manager has stopped working without giving any warnings or error messages.

It tells me there are 18 updates available, then I "check updates" then click "install" and it just keeps going in a loop continually checking for updates, finding them, but will not install them. No matter how many times I click on "install" after it finds the updates available, it goes right back into that loop of checking for them again and never goes beyond that. It used to work just fine.

I hope you can help. Thank you very much! cheryl

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at [WWW] https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. Hello cheryl:

Maybe, You have added some incorrect lines to your file /etc/apt/sources.list, which probably should have been executed in a terminal instead.
To resolve this you need to edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and remove the referred line(s) that should not be there.
As a guide, sources.list should only contain lines that start "deb", "deb-src", "cdrom" or a "#" symbol, anything else is wrong and should not be there. Please refer to the error message, which should contain a line number.
To edit the sources.list file, press ALT+F2 at the Ubuntu desktop and then type the following command in the box, depending on your Ubuntu flavour:
For Ubuntu:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
For Kubuntu:
kdesudo kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list
Exactly as you see it there, then press enter/return. Enter your password when prompted and edit the file in the editor as advised above. You should then save and quit the editor.
The program which reads /etc/apt/sources.list should work again.

For ubuntu 7.10 please paste the below:

Thank you very much! I have no idea what you are telling me since I have only been a Linux convert for less than 6 mos. I can tell you I add NOTHING to what I originally have on here because of this fact...My life doesn't need more complications.

However, I have a dear friend who is a Linux engineer. My issue stimped him too. I will ask him to "translate" what you have recommended for me. I love Ubuntu so far and hope to be able to continue using it, never going back to windows...I have converted lots of folks now.

Thank you very much for your kindness!

Sincerely cheryl

Cheryl, we are going to have to go into your big, bad terminal to fix this. Don't worry, it won't hurt a bit.

I'll need you to go into the terminal (applications>accessories>terminal) and at the prompt type or copy/paste the following

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and copy the results that open in a new window, then paste them here.

Ok, Cheryl, here is what we are going to try. NO TERMINAL this time!!!

-Open "Software Sources" by clicking System>Administration>Software Sources and inputting your password.
-On the "Ubuntu Software" tab make sure each of the first four boxes are checked.
-On the "Updates" tab make sure each of the first four boxes are checked, make sure "Check for updates" is checked and it ts set to "Daily".
-Try the update again.

If it works, GREAT! Let me know. If not, we'll try something else.

Hi Jesse,

I did what you said to do. I only found 2 boxes under "updates" not checked so I checked them. The 1st 2 boxes were checked but the next 2 weren't, so I did check them. I also made certain the" update daily" was checked and it was.

In Ubuntu Software, the boxes are checked, so that one was ok.
I received a message that I needed to restart Firefox due to an update, so I did that, then "checked for updates." It found 86 but couldn't install them...I received this message, "could not apply changes, fix broken packages first."

Thank you for helping me with this problem Jesse..I appreciate your help!

Terminal again. Sorry....

-Applications>Accessories>Terminal

-Then copy/paste the following

sudo apt-get -f install

-Type in your password

That will reinstall apt-get, which is the actual command line program that is being used for the upgrade and package manager. That should take care of it. Let me know if it doesn't and we will...try...something...else...

The bad news is that didn't work either. I got the same error messages when I tried to update it..rather run update and install.

Here's what I got after I typed that into the terminal...hope it helps!

Sorry. Been busy and researching.

It appears that apt-get has somehow gotten corrupted. One suggestion I've found is to go into Software Sources under System>Admin and make sure that you have the United States chosen as the source. One thing that will DEFINITELY work is to go ahead and reinstall using Hardy Heron. BUT...I'm so curious about this problem I'm still looking and haven't forgotten it.

Ok Jesse,
I did this and it does say server United States.

I think the file has been corrupted too. I noticed my printer is acting up again too with the very same issues I had when I first installed Ubuntu making me think the HP aoo is corrupted too now. I have an HP G85 all in one.

A friend of mine who is a Linux engineer is stumped by these issues too and has no idea how to resolve them either. I think he mostly does network engineering though.

The newest version is still in Beta for a little while yet isn't it? If I do download it after it comes out of Beta, will I lose all the data I have stored on my HD in my documents files etc? Or will it jus t "overlay" on top of this O/S?

I appreciate you checking all this out for me Jesse. I was wondering if you gave up...LOL Nothing simple ever happens to me!

Thanks for all your help. I appreciate it very much and will wait patiently..

The current issue is a full release and I've been testing the heck out of it since the 24th and it's stable. You shouldn't have any problems with it. Plus it's a long term service version, so security updates and bug fixes will be coming out for three years instead of the typical 18 months.

Is your computer partitioned into at least three separate areas? What I mean is, do you have Ubuntu on one partition, a swap partition and another one? If so, upgrading without losing anything will be easy, but you still have to be careful. Let me know and I will walk you through that.

Hi Jesse,

No my computer isn't partioned. I only use the Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10. I'm unable to update this version with the newer Gutsy Gibbon version due to the Update Manager being non functional, and unable then to also UPGRADE to Hardy Heron via the net because I don't have the latest version of Gutsy installed, plus the Update Manager doesn't work.

My Linux engineer friend emailed me back this am and said he has been using Hardy Heron now for awhile and like you, says the latest production release is very stable. He says it cleared up issues he was having including some with the Update Manager. He said the net download takes about 30+ hours even with a high speed connection, so he is mailing the CD version to me after he burns it. Lon says it should just "overlay"and not create more problems or data loss for me...but I still think I will back up my stored files and data just in case.

What do you think Jesse? Does this sound like a good plan to you?

I appreciate all your help! You are certainly most dedicated, very thorough, knowledgable and can explain things very easily for us newbies. Thank you very much!
Sincerely,
Cheryl :o)

Well, it depends on when and where he downloaded it from. If he was trying to get the newest version on release day then it probably DID take that long. I downloaded the release candidate (which turned into the actual release) on the 23rd (the night before release) and it took me about an hour.

ALWAYS back up any important files before doing any upgrade. That goes for any OS. I've never tried to do an upgrade from CD but it looks like it should work. Check here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades

and you will see that there are instructions on how to do that.

Out of curiosity I just went to the page I gave you above and started the download process and it's telling me that downloading it will take just over one hour right now. I'm on DSL.

PLEASE NOTE you are going to need the "alternate install" CD, not the regular one. That will give you the option to upgrade from an existing installation. I don't see an option to do so from the standard installer. You will need to ask your Engineer buddy which he is sending you. If it's the regular, you will need the alternate.

Thanks for the kind words and let me know how it goes.

I just forwarded your answer to Lon to be sure he send me the right CD version. I would have never know to ask...Thanks so much for your help Jesse. I really appreciate it and I hope the latest version does indeed solve my issues...provided of course I get the right CD and install instructions. I'll look at the site you sent here too.

If I wanted to try to download the "alternate version" is it available for download? I also have DSL (Lon does too)..and he probably did dl it on the release day! Where would I go to download the correct version please and would this be the version for those of us still using 7.10? I know I have to use a different version since I don't have the latest Gutsy version.

Do you have any other sites you recommend from Ubuntu besides the download site, like the how to install site from a dl, how to use site, where to report bugs, that sort of thing, Jesse?

Man, what a challenge huh?

Thank you so much for all your help! I don't know what I would have done without it! Can I request you in the future when I have issues? Is there a LaunchPad for Heron too?

Thanks again!
Cheryl :o)

Jesse proposed the following answer:
Well, it depends on when and where he downloaded it from. If he was
trying to get the newest version on release day then it probably DID
take that long. I downloaded the release candidate (which turned into
the actual release) on the 23rd (the night before release) and it took
me about an hour.

ALWAYS back up any important files before doing any upgrade. That goes
for any OS. I've never tried to do an upgrade from CD but it looks like
it should work. Check here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades

and you will see that there are instructions on how to do that.

Out of curiosity I just went to the page I gave you above and started
the download process and it's telling me that downloading it will take
just over one hour right now. I'm on DSL.

PLEASE NOTE you are going to need the "alternate install" CD, not the
regular one. That will give you the option to upgrade from an existing
installation. I don't see an option to do so from the standard
installer. You will need to ask your Engineer buddy which he is sending
you. If it's the regular, you will need the alternate.

Thanks for the kind words and let me know how it goes.

Ooops, looks like I left something important out. The downloads are available at

http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/

About halfway down the page you will find the heading "Alternate Install CD". I'm assuming the computer you use is 32 bit. If so, you want the one titled "PC (Intel x86) alternate install CD". If it's 64 bit it would be the next in line, called "64-bit PC (AMD64) alternate install CD". Most likely it's the first one. After you have downloaded the CD image file (called a .iso file) to your desktop, double click it which will open a dialogue which will show first, your CD or DVD drive, the disk name and give you option to set the speed of the burn. I generally never use the "maximum" setting. I set it lower, usually at the middle of whatever options it gives. Next, go have a sandwich and/or the beverage of your choice and come back in ten or 15 minutes. Sitting there should be a nice, shiny new Ubuntu 8.04 install disc! I've never used the alternate CD installer (though I should download it and try it out) but if it's anything like the other installs I've done it should be a snap. My understanding is that it will ask if you are upgrading and proceed to do so.

I've found the best resource for answers and help is at the Ubuntu forums at http://ubuntuforums.org/. Generally just a key word search will find answers to nearly any problem in a short period of time as well as a ton of useful tutorials and other material. Just sign up for an account there and the rest is easy. I'm user "puptentacle" there, so join up, PM me there and that's the best way to get me.

Cheryl, I've been a newbie before, and a lot of the time I still feel like one (like trying to set up my home network for file sharing with Samba this week!!!) but I think that the best part of Ubuntu is everyone can play a part. If you are a programmer, go program. If you are a user, go help someone else. That's the whole philosophy of "Ubuntu". I also understand how difficult it is when you ask what seems to be a simple question and you get back something that looks like
a mile of gibberish in return!

I'll look forward to hearing from you at the forums!

Jesse,

I'm so sorry I got tied up with company (I rarely have company) and didn't get back to you right away.

Yep, I have the x86 machine...you got that right! My processor is the AMD Thunderbird 1400mgh

If I get brave enough to try and dl/burn the new version onto CD, I won't check upgrade though since I am not upgrading and need a full install since I don't have the latest Gutsy version, right? I'd burn it to DVD since my CD won't "overburn."

I'll follow your instructions on here...that's if I get brave. If not, I wait for Lon to send my CD he promised. He can "overburn!"

I'll sign up at the Forums and look for you there. I can learn a lot from them I'm sure. Thank you for telling me about them.

Good luck with Samba and your network setup. I bet you'll do fine!

Thanks for the easy answers you gave me. Makes using Ubuntu so much nicer.

We can call this issue closed then since I will be technically upgrading soon and this issue will hopefully be moot afterwards! I'll back everything up before I try anything though.

Thanks for all your help Jesse. I really do appreciate it! Will see you at the forums! cheryl
