Audio on HP laptop not working

Help I am new to Ubuntu I have a HP 4150 Laptop and no audio?

The audio device is a Neomagic
NM2200 [MagicMedia 256AV Audio]

In device manager it has picked up the details of the device?

Device type and caperbilities are Unknown?

Error when trying to access the Speaker Icon

No volume control and GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.

I am using Ubuntu 6.06 and I have updated the software

Can you try the following:-

Open a terminal with Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal.

Type the following command:-

dmesg | grep -i nm256 > ~/nm256 && gedit ~/nm256

You should get a text editor with some text in it. Could you please paste the result here?

Also in the terminal what do you get if you run the following command:-

alsamixer

Hi Alan,

I got the following from the text editor command?

[ 81.630692] nm256: The device is blacklisted. Loading stopped

This was displayed after the command was entered

When I send the alsamixer command i get the following;

paul@HAL:~$ alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
paul@HAL:~$

I have found a article telling how ro install RedHat on this Laptop HP OminBook 4150

They used the following for the audio driver

• It uses the Neomagic Sound Chip which is not supported in Linux. The commercial OSS driver will work, but does not support this chip officially.

I do not know how to load drivers in ubuntu OS?

There is a bug filed for this problem with Dapper.
