Computer shuts down when i try to install ubuntu

Asked by JVerMeer

I ran the check for errors on the installation cd for ubuntu 7.10 and it checked out just fine, but when i went clicked on start or install ubuntu it ran through the command or log screen, i'm not sure what its called, and then the computer just shut off. The screen slowly turned white with two horizontal lines running through it and then slowly it began to turn dark again. But mostly i concerned with the fact that instead of installing ubuntu, the computer shut off, just curious to see if there's anything that i can do to fix the problem. thanks for your time.

Sounds very frustrating. If you don't have anything important on the machine, then I suggest you try again. You might want to try the alternative CD if you have less than about 320MB RAM.

It's possible that the problem is with your graphics card (if you have one). Try taking it out and installing Ubuntu.
It's possible the problem is that Ubuntu cannot communicate with your graphics card, again try again after taking the card out.

Thanks very much for your input, just a couple of things. I'm trying to install this on a new hp notebook, and i have an nvidia graphics card and i'd like to keep windows on the computer and have the option of running either at boot. Do you have any suggestions?

1.st i suggest you to install the 32bit release of Ubuntu
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/32bit_and_64bit

Please make some common check using first boot menu Ubuntu live cd options...
This: http://i18.tinypic.com/6tzzndc.jpg
Try to perform the "Memory test" and the "Check cd for defects" to be sure the cd is read without errors by the destination pc cdrom driver

- Booting from Ubuntu live install cd:
* if you are in trouble with screen graphic user interface (usually the screen is black with a blinking cursor):
- first try to dynamically change screen resolution plese the press CTRL + ALT + "+" and/or CTRL + ALT + "-"
- Try to restart the graphic layer press CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE

If you are still in trouble... please reboot your pc and starting with Ubuntu live cd please try to put some common Ubuntu kernel live cd options you can find the boot options howto here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

Remove the "splash" and "quiet" options to see more boot infos message and/or errors.
Then try some commons parameters by putting them one by one or together:
noacpi nolapic nodma all_generic_ide

If this don't work i suggest you to download and burn on a cd at lower speed you can do (4x)
here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
the Ubuntu alternate install cd iso image ( ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso ) you can download this cd from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/

If you are in trouble to download you can try to install and use a torrent client Deluge http://www.deluge-torrent.org/downloads.php to get your desired Ubuntu iso image http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/7.10/release/ please select a .torrent file

Hope this helps
