wireless chpiset 4328 and ndiswrapper

Asked by hormosapiens

I tried out the new ubuntu hardy heron 8.04 this weekend and everything was ok on my dell inspiron 6400(2duo 2ghz, 1gb ram, ati x1300, 1440x900, wireless draft N,) accept the wireless card. normally from feisty and on I've used ndiswrapper to load windows driver and connect to the world. but now with hardy upcoming on April I discovered that chipset 4328 broadcom is not supported by b43xxx or b43 or b43legacy, so the only alternative it remains ndiswrapper.....which have problems to load on kernel 2.6.24. ( ssb loads before ndis or something like this, from what I saw on hardy bugs launchpad). there is a workaround but difficult to follow and it mess up more than fix problems.

now if some one can think of a solution by the time hardy becomes a stable release it would be very helpfully. all new laptops are coming now with draft N incorporated so a lot of people will have the same problem.

for the rest long live ubuntu:)

Funny you mention this. I"ve been trying for two days to fix this issue myself. This bug https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/197558 has some info on a workaround (comment 14). I am going to try it tonight and see what happens. However, I would love to see this fixed before the release too. Keep your fingers crossed.

I have a Dell D531 laptop with the Broadcom BCM4328 wireless card. Using the final release of Hardy, I basically followed this link...
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=185174
except that instead of downloading ndiswrapper from SourceForge, I grabbed it via the Synaptic Package Manager.

Result: a working wireless card!

Can you help with this problem?
