My Sound just randomly stoped working,, when I put my ubutu cd and run it "LIVE" my sound works fine

Asked by MichaelBrown

My little brother was using my computer last night. I am not sure what he did but my sound wont work any more. It looks like my computer sees my sound card. I have my volume turned up and tried my head phones but it didn't work. Im not sure were the settings are but I went to system > preferences > sound I started to mess with that but it didnt help and when I hit test it takes for ever and just keeps on running. I was thinking I had a bad sound card and was considering pulling one out of my old PC but before doing that I thought Id put in the Ubuntu Cd and run it "LIVE". My sound works fine. The only way that I know how to fix this problem is by backing up my crap and reinstalling ubuntu. I was hoping some one on here had a better idea. Thanks!

Without knowing anything about your computer or what version of Ubuntu you're running it a bit hard. For me though, after updating to the hardy beta my sound stopped working. Turned out to be a kernel/Nvidia issue.
So, maybe he updated something???

Try going back a kernel

here was my page
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/27669

and this is the page which in the end solved my problem
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24/+bug/188287/

Not that any one on here gives a crap but this what I had to do.
 sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils

then

sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils

then my desk top wouldn't go on so I

sudo apt-get install gdm ubuntu-desktop

then my sound still didn't work so now I installed ubuntu 7.10 fresh.

That seemed to work, I have 236 or so updates to download and I see if one of the updates will mess up my sound if so I will let the community know. Basically I unchecked any update that had to do with sound and will try them one by one to see if any of them is to blame.

I think may be a kernel or alsa issue...
Please after fully upgrade the 7.10 jump directly to Ubuntu 8.04 with different more recent kernel.
Ubuntu 8.04 is now in beta stage and i thiink is better to test this release... i use it on 4 pc without any issue.

To upgrade 7.10 to 8.04 simply press ALT+F2 and type update-manager -d

An make your test with this release...

Thank you
