Please try yourself by downloading and burning the Ubuntu 7.10 live install cd onto a cd.
Then please boot your Gateway T 6815 from the live cd
I think Ubuntu is working with this laptop pc
Here some minor solved issue http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=587694

------

If you want you can also directly jump to the next (april 2008) Ubuntu 8.04 now in beta release stage.

I use Ubuntu 8.04 on 4 pc and it is pretty usable.

Hope this helps

As marcobra replied above, you can always try it yourself with a LiveCD.

I will add that the most probable reason WinXP did not recognize the HD was that it is a SATA drive (if this is the notebook, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834101066 ). WinXP does not include many (if any) sata drivers, and so it cannot recognize the chipsets that let the OS talk to the hard drive. Ubuntu includes many sata drivers, and should work.

I will also add that I have installed Ubuntu on 2 recent Gateways (Core 2 Duos ~1 yr old), and it works phenomenally.

Can you help with this problem?
