media: and system: devices not recognised- Kubuntu.

Asked by dez

When using certain programs like openoffice and firefox for example, kubuntu uses devices like media: and system: in its path which are not recognised by these programs. Is there a way to add them to the device path list as say an alias ( a la AmigaDOS) or symlink? I've tried putting a symlink in the dev: path but kubuntu just deletes it. Is there an config file within (k)ubuntu for the purpose of adding paths?

Apologies for the delay in answering. I do not use KDE personally, but understand what you are saying.

The two applications you mention happen to not be "native" KDE apps. I note there is a product called kopenoffice <http://kde.openoffice.org/index.html> which strives to "to provide tight (but optional) integration of the OpenOffice.org to the KDE environment beginning with KDE look and feel and ending with KDE data sources.!"

I also note that bug 43238 is a filed against firefox which matches what you're asking for. There is also a specification about it https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/firefox-kde-support and there is a forum posting which shows how you can change the file-picker dialog: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=110353

Hope that helps.
