NEW PC with Windows7 Pro - trying to install Ubuntu15.10

Asked by Rich.b

Just built my new PC and it has Windows 7 Pro installed. The only reason it has Windows is to access 4oD streaming as we can't get 4oD to work on Linux.(Firefox or Chrome) just get grey screen.

PC Spec:-
ATX case with 500Watt PSU
Gigabyte Socket 1150 Micro ATX Motherboard - GA-H81M-S2H
Intel Pentium G3220 3.0GHz - BX80646G3220
8GB DDR3 1600MHz DIMM - PC3-12800
128GB SATA-III Solid State Drive - Kingston V300
500GB HDD Seagate Barracuda SATA3 - ST500DM002
Internal SATA Multi-format DVD Writer – SH2-244DB
Multi Card Reader – CR005V4
Windows 7 Professional – 64 Bit

I would like to installed Ubuntu 15.10 64Bit (have been using Ubuntu since 2009 from 09.04 to now 12.04 on a Dell PC Dimension 2400)

I have been told to “Do something else” when setting up Linux as I would like to have Ubuntu on SSD and Home folder on the HDD.

Installation Type:-

/dev/sda format Size Used
/dev/sda1 ntfs 104mb 25mb
/dev/sda2 ntfs 53329mb 38799mb
Free space 66598mb

/dev/sdb
/dev/sdb1 ntfs 80674mb 92mb
Free Space 419432mb

I am have had trouble setting this up as keep getting a statement saying something like you have not allocated a swap space.

Question:-

What am I doing wrong or missing a step or too?

Thank you for any help.

Set the space on sda as / and the space in sdb use 9Gb for swap and the rest for /home formatted Ext4

Sorry did not get much farther:-

So I selected "Do something Else" Selected the Free space on sda 66598mb in Installation Type, then press +

In new window "Create Partition" it said size 66599 -+MB

? Do I select in Type for this new partition

? Primary
? Logical
? Being of this space
? End of this space

Use as Ext4 (Journaling file system)
Mount point ?

I still get a message that I have not set up a "Swap Space"

I think I need a lot more help ..... Please .... step by step would be very helpful.

How much memory do you have? You should create a swap file with about the same size.

I recommend that you create two additional partitions on sda, one for data and one for the swap file.
something like:

sda3, 60000 MB, ext4 for /
sda4, the rest, swap

Thank you Manfred, I have 8GB of ram as stated in my question.

So I create 2 partitions on my SSD sda3 & sda4 that I understand.

But not sure about the rest:-

So I selected "Do something Else" Selected the Free space on sda 66598mb in Installation Type, then press +

In new window "Create Partition" it said size 66599 -+MB

? Do I select in Type for this new partition

? Primary <<<<<<<<<<<<
? Logical or <<<<<<<<<<
? Being of this space ...were do I start
? End of this space

Use as Ext4 (Journaling file system)
Mount point ?

Sorry, that I overlooked the information about your RAM size and asked again.

66599-8192=58407

I do not have an empty hard disk at hand, so I cannot really test it myself, but I assume the steps should be:
do something else
select free space
press +
New window create partition:
size 58400 MB (use +/- buttons or type the number)
Primary
Beginning of free space
Use as ext4
mount point /
OK

Then do the same again
select free space
press +
New window create partition:
size should be 8200 MB (or whatever it shows, try using the maximum)
Primary
Use as swap area
OK

Thank you Manfred, I still have a problem.

I have set 2 extra partitions

/dev/sda1 ntfs 104mb 25mb
/dev/sda2 ntfs 53329mb 40913mb
/dev/sda3 ext4 / 58400mb unknown
/dev/sda4 ext4 /swap 8197mb unknown

/dev/sd4 ext4 I set this /swap (manually) but it said that I had not selected any partitions for use as swap space ?

The only options are as follows:-

/
/boot
/home
/tmp
/usr
/var
/srv
/opt
/usr/local

/dev/sda4 should not be ext4 but swap (you will not get the field for the mount point then)

So do I just put in sda4 the following:-

/dev/sda4 swap

?

And for sdb1 is for Windows Data and sdb2 will be for /home for Linux

/dev/sdb
/dev/sdb1 ntfs
/dev/sdb2 ext4 /home

Is this correct ?

Thanks for any help.

/dev/sdb1 ntfs 80674mb 92mb
/dev/sdb2 ext4 419431mb 6821mb

Also note that have lost Window7 PRO.

The ssd is still there sda1 and sda2 where Windows should be, but can't boot into Windows, I am not given a choice, boots straight into Ubuntu 15.10.

I have had looked at boot listing but unable to boot from sda1

Any help please?

"/dev/sda5 ext4 swap 13268mb unknown (Note sda5)"
looks strange to me. It can either be formatted as ext4 or as swap. and it should not be listed as "unknown".

I recommend run the bootinfo script to show the current status of the bits and pieces related to booting.

Thank you Manfred for Help.

I have solved the problem not seeing Windows.

The reason that I did not see the start up options where there was options to choose Ubuntu, Advance options for Ubuntu, Memory Test and Windows.

Was because my new Acer K242HQK 4K monitor was cycling through it's start up routine for input options HDMI, DV1 DISPLAYPORT and by the time it had done this, the default started Ubuntu as this was the first option on the list.

I will look at the sda5 on ssd and perhaps reinstall the OS again.

I do not see any problem.
/dev/sda5 is enabled as swap and correctly defined in /etc/fstab. Due to the fact that you have enough RAM, the swap area is not used at this moment, but it is available for use in case that this will become necessary,

Maybe you should consider increasing the time limit for the selection on the initial boot screen to allow the monitor enough time to detect the input source.

How do I change the time limit on the initial boot screen please.

Have just received Linux Format January 2016 LXF206 with a good tutorial on " Set your Partitions" which I am now reading!

How to change the time limit for the grub menu:

Issue the command

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

This will ask for your password as confirmation for an administrative task and then open an editor with the grub configuration file loaded.

1. You have to add and/or remove the hash signs ('#') at the beginning of the lines that you have

...
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTION=...
...

2. You can set a shorter/longer timeout by modifying the number at "GRUB_TIMEOUT=" (time in seconds). (Don't change anything else in that file.)

After the modification(s) save the file and close the editor.
Finally issue the command

sudo update-grub

Rich.b (aybi30) said :

Thank you again Manfred.

All up and running correctly including Get_iPlayer

Got this error -

sudo update-grub
Generating grub configuration file ...
Warning: Setting GRUB_TIMEOUT to a non-zero value when GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT is set is no longer supported.

So changed GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0

To GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=20

This gave me more time.

If you receive the "Setting GRUB_TIMEOUT to a non-zero value ..." warning, then you did not fully follow my instructions. Probably they were not clear enough.

I assume you did not put a hash sign in front of the line #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0

I recommended to set it to

...
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTION=...
...

(Note, that there is a hash sign in front of #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0, but in none of the other lines in that block).

But if the behaviour is already what you want, you can just leave it as you have it now.
