Hi

I had similar problems once, turned out to be a buggy CD-ROM firmware. This link had the fix for my issue, maybe the issue is the same for you. Look for the posts from Thomas Aaron. Even though his computer was a System 76, the fix worked for my no-name system (Compal Information Technology) system. https://bugs.launchpad.net/system76/+bug/117441

You can check by typing the following command in a terminal window. It will ask for your password, type it in and press enter even though you won't see anything while typing it, it is ok.

sudo lshw -C disk

Scroll through until you see the CD drive, if it is from TSSTcorp, then it is likely the problem. Follow the directions on the link, and it should fix it. A work around is to just keep a CD in the drive, that keeps it from freezing up...

Good luck, and hope this helps.

Could you test if this happens on other Operating Systems (if you have any)? Otherwise, there may be a scheduled job (cron script) running every ten minutes to cause this. Could you post the contents of /etc/crontab here for us?
What applications do you have running when it freezes?

Can you help with this problem?
