If Precise is working, why not keep it. It's supported til April 2017.

You can upgrade directly to Trusty as LTS to LTS upgrades are supported. Trusty is LTS and supported til April 2019.

I have not heard much about problems when upgrading from 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS. Most reports about things not working were for upgrades involving the non-LTS-versions e.g. 13.04 and 13.10

You should in any case care for a backup of your private files on an external medium, that you can easily install a new version of the operating system and restore your data in case that something goes wrong.

Can you help with this problem?
