Wireless Connection Disabled

Asked by Torben

Hello I am Juan

I have installed a few days ago a wired connexion to my laptop (Compaq Presario C700) with the command line pppoeconf. I am using Ubuntu 9.1. The wired connexion is just fine, but my computer does not detect any wireless network anymore. Any ideas on this?

This is what I get when I insert the command lshw:

I have the same chipset on my WLAN-card. All I had to do was to click on the Broadcom firmware in Restricted Manager and everything worked. Since I knew the encryption, WPA, typing in the password made internet available.

So you have loaded the firmware and you can see your home network but you can't connect? System-->Administration-->Network. Is your wireless in roaming mode?

I double-checked the network and I am in wireless roaming mode (checked making the boxes below un-editable). Still when I click on the connection icon (upper right hand corner of the desktop) and click it...it says "wireless networks" but no networks are listed underneath. I'm writing in windows XP now and the connection strength and wireless connection is excellent so for some reason my computer isn't finding the wireless network when in Ubuntu. I can't wait to get it set up and running so I can stop switching back and forth between operating systems and can just get help online through Ubuntu!
Thanks for the reply. Any other suggestions?

I don't know if it is necessary but here is some more information on my Network Adapter:
Broadcom 802.11g
I guess the driver information is useless because it is all windows information. If there is more info anyone else out there needs just let me know and I'll provide it.

So I'm running a Gateway 7510GX laptop (AMD Athlon 64) Processor 3700+
I noticed that in windows the laptop has a little lit-up wireless light on the keyboard. This can be toggled on and off via the function key and F2. I went in to Ubuntu to check if this light was on and, if it wasn't, if I could turn it on and thus allow the hardware to look for the wireless connection. In Ubuntu the light was not on and I couldn't get it to toggle on via the keyboard. So whatever is going on has to be between the Ubuntu software and the hardware in this laptop. Hopefully this is helpful info.

hello,
I have the same wireless card, and I solved my problem with these step:
download bcm43xx-firmware_1.3-1ubuntu2_all.deb package from this link: 1:http://ubuntu.cafuego.net/pool/feisty-cafuego/bcm43xx/bcm43xx-firmware_1.3-1ubuntu2_all.deb
2:click to install it.
3:restart the computer
4:type in terminal:
sudo modprobe bcm43xx
now you can use your wirelesscard

or you can try this link:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx/Gutsy

hope this help

Just checking: in the restricted manager. Is the Broadcom Firmware installed? Is the checkbox checked? :)

When you check that, and HAVE INTERNET CONNECTION, Ubuntu will download what it needs for the WLAN-card and you will get wireless. But you need wired network to get the packages. Have you done this?

Torben, You are the most wonderful person ever! Thank you. I was freaking out because my wireless was disabled. Fn F2 solved my problem. As soon as I read that, I realized I had accidentally pressed Fn F2 when I was trying to open the command window. Thank you Thank you Thank you!
