Ubuntu/Xubuntu 14.04 + radeon x300/x550/x1050 drivers?

Asked by Dean

Greetings friends,
Im a new user and would really like to know if there is a way that my old graphics card can be used to its fullest under ubuntu?
radeon x300/x550/x1050

I know Ubuntu comes with integrated radeon drivers which I think are supported with my video card, but is that enough?

I tried installing the Legacy Catalyst Control Center 9.3: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=Legacy1&os=Linux%20x86
but only messed up everything and decided to reinstall the OS.

Please give me a piece of mind what should I do and whats the best way to use this graphics card under Ubuntu.
Should I use an earlier Ubuntu release that supports the ati CCC ? Should I stick to the opengl drivers in the ubuntu installation?
Is the 3d acceleration good?
I really want to use this PC to atleast play an old version of World of Warcraft.

I hope to hear from you guys
best of everything

Please provide some diagnostic information about your system.
Open a terminal window and issue the following commands:

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo lshw -C display

then use the terminal window's menu entries "edit - select all" and "edit - copy" and finally paste all output into this question document that you have already created.

I am not completely sure, but it seems that you already have the recommended driver for your display adapter installed.
What is the output of the command

xrandr

Ubuntu is awesome, yes. But it seems I need a new pc to be able to run it with WoW.
Getting max 10-15fps in the game launched through Wine.

What CPU do you have?

I do not know what the hardware requirements for WoW are. Maybe someone else can help.

bad CPU, 2.8ghz Intel Celeron

The game runs fine under windows, I just did not expect it to run so bad on ubuntu. But its totally understandable, given my 10yold pc.

"...The game runs fine under windows..." on the same hard ware, or on another system with a different CPU and graphics adapter?
