Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
If you burned an optical media, did you burn as slowly as possible?

If you are wanting to dual boot, did you run a full chkdsk on the NTFS partition to make sure it is healthy.

But not new to searching the Web to find out.....

Even the most basic search gives this website:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

As long as the NTFS partition has been tested it will be OK.

You do know that Windows XP is no longer supported. Why are you using it at all?

you're right, sorry :P but thanks for the link :)
okay, now I ran a chkdsk and everything seems to be okay,
I will MD5 test the ISO and report again ;)
yeah I know XP is damn old, but Im a student and at the moment I dont have the money for a newer version, besides, XP was already installed on the computer when I got it and it worked for me, so these 2 reasons are why :D

A good reason would be that some applications you use only run in Windows and do not work with WINE.

Ubuntu is completely free and removing XP may make installing Ubuntu easier. What applications do you run in XP?

You may also want to defrag the NTFS partition. I can imagine the install is very old and the data is all over the place.

to be honest, the only thing I havent figured out how to use in Ubuntu is the flash player add-on for firefox. I only found the add-ons for youtube. (altough I don't know how that can be, because you run youtube in firefox xD)

well I would consider removing XP if I knew more about using linux properly, but I fear that if I remove XP and something goes wrong, or I just don't 'get along' with linux, I have nothing to work with, and that's someting I can't risk at the moment.

I have already defragmented the NTFS partition :) yeah the data really was all over the place :D
well I think I found a possible reason for my problem. Maybe I just downloaded the wrong ISO file. that would be very embarrassing, but if I downloaded the 64bit version and have a 32bit computer, that wouldn't work right? I mean could the installation even start?

If your CPU is only 32bit then it will only run 32bit Ubuntu. If it's 64bit then it will run either. What CPU do you have?

after searching the internet how to find out, I have a 32bit CPU :/ and I definitely downloaded the 64bit ISO file, so why has the installation started anyway? o.O shouldn't there just be an error message?

Okay, I finally got it :)
It really was the ISO file. I downloaded the wrong file, it's not clear to me why the installation has started anyway, but well, as long as it works now, everything's good :D
thank you very much for your help and your patience (I know, such beginner flaws can be annoying :/ ). Without your help I guess I wouldn't have figured it out.
