There is no reasonable way to regain your current password, but there is a process to set a new one
see http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

Thank you for responding. It still has not worked and now I'm experiencing
delayed typing and trouble connecting and downloading to the internet. The
root menu states the password is unchanged and that there is an
Authentication token manipulation error. Is there not a way to simply start
completely over with a new OS? I am so far rather unimpressed with Ubuntu
but would like to keep trying it.

Have you issued the remount command before issuing the passwd command to set a new password?

What exactly is there "constantly crashing"?

I did try the remount command with the same result: Authentication Token
Manipulation Error. If I surf the web, no matter what sites I visit, after
about 30 minutes the browser will crash. Should I erase my hard drive and
start anew?

Which Ubuntu version are you running? Maybe you better stick to the LTS versions, i.e. install 14.04 and do not upgrade it to the non-LTS-versions 14.10, 15.04 and 15.10 unless you have the immediate need to do so (e.g. because of hardware that needs updated drivers that are only available in a higher Ubuntu version).

Can you help with this problem?
