What programs can be installed?

Asked by Buzzer1001

I'm fairly well established on xp, but am also aware of its shortcomings.

I would like to give Ubuntu a go but can't seem to find enough information on what type of programs can be installed on it. For example, my main programs are:
- ArchiCAD
- SketchUp
- Microsoft Access (many databases already programmed)
- Microsoft Excel (many spreadsheets with complex macros already written)
- iTunes (whole library in AAC format)
- Timeleft (used to track time to charge out)
- Realarcade (my wife would kill me if she couldn't use that)

Also, when I'm searching the web for other programs, how do I know that it can be installed in Ubuntu (because typically they only list Windows, Mac & Linux)?

These are fairly Newb questions, but there you go.

Thanks in advance,

Bruce

Thanks for the question.

The programs you refer to seem to be Windows programs. You can only run windows programs under ubuntu through wine. For a lost of software that works under wine please look here: http://appdb.winehq.org/

However, for many of those programs there are similar and compatible software available under ubuntu. i.e. OpenOffice is compatible to Microsoft Office. For a full list of software look at http://packages.ubuntu.com. You can find an Application Crossover list here: http://www.grokdoc.net/index.php/Application_Crossover_Chart

I hope this helps.

Can you help with this problem?
