Icons dissapeared and special effects

Asked by Melvyn

I just had to reinstall Compiz, Gnome Panel and Metacity. Two things happened:

1- All the icons on my desktop disapeared. This in itself is a problem but when I tried to put them back again going to the applications menu, right-clicking on the selected programme and again on the "Send to desktop" option nothing happens. Drag and drop doesn't work either. They will move to the taskbar, though, but not to the desktop.

2. When I installed Compiz the firs time I could access a large menu of option (cube, fire on the screen etc) through System/Preferences/Appearance and then the Visual effects tab. There also was a specific option for this on the Preferences menu. It's nowhere to be seen now.

Any solutions for both problems?

Hello,

1. Open a terminal (ALT+F2) and type gconf-editor. Go to apps > nautilus > preferences and check the box next to show desktop.

2. Open a terminal and type compizconfig-settings-manager. If it's not installed, do so with sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager. The Compiz settings manager should appear in the system > preferences menu.

Cheers,
