Problems installing Ubuntu 7.10/8.04 beta

Asked by Jeff C. Matheson

I am trying to install Ubuntu 7.10 or 8.04 beta on my computer with no success so far. The computer has an Asus P5P800-MX motherboard with an Intel P4 3.0GHz processor, 1Gb of PC2100 DDR SDRAM, and an IBM Deskstar 40Gb IDE hard drive (16383/16/63). I have a Future Power 17" monitor. I had an old copy of Ubuntu 5.10 which I was successfully able to install on this hard drive, and it boots ok.

When I try to boot from the Ubuntu 7.10 or 8.04 beta CD's, they boot from the CD to the live screen without any problems. I had problems at first getting the 7.10 disk to boot (the screen would eventually go to a mess of random colors and nothing would load after that). When I try to install either version, I get as far as the partition screen. At that point it is evident that neither version is recognizing the hard drive. In live mode, if I load the partition editor, it is also does not recognise the hard drive. Unbuntu 5.10 recognized the hard drive and I was able to install it on the hard drive, and it boots properly. I have also booted from a Windows XP Professional install disk, and it is able to recognize the hard drive.

What can I do to get 7.10 or 8.04 beta to load to this hard drive?

Greetings!

As per my original message, when I tried to boot from the Ubuntu 7.10 disk,
it started the boot process but then the screen when to a mess of colors and
the PC wouldn't do anything, so I had to restart the computer. I then
booted from the 8.04 beta disk, which booted to live mode properly.

From the command prompt, I entered the command 'sudo fdisk -l'. When I hit
enter, the screen returned to the command prompt, but nothing else happened
or was displayed. Any ideas?

Have already tried the all_generic_ide boot parameter...?

Please reboot your pc and starting with Ubuntu live cd please try to put some common Ubuntu kernel live cd options you can find the boot options howto here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

Remove the "splash" and "quiet" options to see more boot infos message and/or errors.
Then try some commons parameters by putting them one by one or together:
noacpi nolapic nodma all_generic_ide

Hope this helps
