Bin executable files are run not! I downloaded google hearth and the executable is not launched!

This is expected behavior, so converting to a question. To make the file executable run "chmod +x filename.bin" and then execute it.

If you are using gutsy or hardy, a better approach to installing google earth would be to just open a terminal (apps-accessories) and typing

sudo apt-get install googleearth

You can also add the medibuntu repository and install it. I'm not sure if one or there other would result in a newer version. My guess is medibuntu might be newer but I haven't checked. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu.
